Evian-Les-Bains, France: The leaders of the G7 countries are making the Ukraine conflict a priority again. This comes as US President Donald Trump is focusing more on the war. There was progress towards a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the G7 leaders for a meeting. They discussed how to help Ukraine. Put more pressure on Russia. The conflict has been going on for over four years.
The leaders agreed to increase sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sectors. They also want to give Ukraine air defence systems and other military support. Russia launched an attack on Ukraine just hours before the meeting. They fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at cities. At least 11 people were killed, and many buildings were damaged.
Trump said that the US-Iran agreement will help the US focus more on ending the war in Ukraine. He said, “Iran will not be a problem for long. I will do everything I can to help.” The UK announced sanctions on Russia’s ships that transport oil and gas. They also targeted networks that help Russia avoid Western restrictions.
European leaders welcomed the move. They want to put economic pressure on Russia and keep supporting Ukraine’s defence. The US has reduced its aid to Ukraine under Trump’s administration. European countries have taken a bigger role in supporting Ukraine. France, Germany and the UK are giving a lot of financial aid.
The summit also talked about Ukraine’s long-term goals. Ukraine started talks to join the European Union. This is expected to be a process. Ukraine still wants to join NATO for its security. The Trump administration says this is not possible while the conflict continues. The G7 leaders also discussed Middle East security. They want to work to keep global stability and safeguard energy supplies.
The G7 countries are the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK. This year’s summit also includes partner countries, like India, Brazil, Kenya and South Korea. The leaders agreed that supporting Ukraine is still a priority. They will keep putting pressure on Russia and helping Ukraine defend itself.
