Etihad Rail has successfully conducted a cross-border passenger train trial between Al Ghuwaifat, near the Saudi border, and Al Faya in Abu Dhabi—marking a significant step in strengthening the UAE’s transport readiness amid a period of heightened regional uncertainty.
The trial, carried out in close coordination with the Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre Abu Dhabi, is part of a broader strategy to ensure that vital mobility channels remain open and resilient, even as risk assessments across the region evolve. By activating this key UAE–Saudi rail corridor, authorities are testing their ability to keep people and goods moving smoothly, no matter what challenges arise.
This strategic route not only supports travel for UAE nationals and residents, but also provides authorities with an alternative transit option, aligning with approved emergency response plans. It’s a clear demonstration of how the UAE is thinking ahead—ensuring alternative solutions are in place before they’re needed.
Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre, emphasized that transport system readiness is at the heart of Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive response ecosystem. With clear governance and integrated coordination across sectors, the emirate is well positioned to adapt quickly and deploy resources efficiently as situations change.
“Flexibility within our transport sector directly underpins essential services, logistics security, societal stability, and public confidence,” Al Nuaimi said. The centre continues to monitor the situation around the clock, fine-tuning readiness to meet any emerging challenge.
Engineer Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, highlighted that the national railway network is built to deliver continuity, safety, and reliability—no matter the circumstances. The trial, he added, reflects leadership directives to bolster the UAE’s transport ecosystem and ensure it can support society during both normal operations and periods of crisis.
By proactively testing and activating alternative mobility options, Abu Dhabi is reinforcing its commitment to service continuity, infrastructure resilience, and rapid, coordinated responses in the face of shifting regional dynamics. The message is clear: through smart planning and operational readiness, the UAE is making sure its transport systems—and its people—are prepared for whatever comes next.
