UAE Announces Temporary Overstay Fine Waiver: Who Qualifies and How to Check Your Status

In a move to support travellers caught up in recent regional airspace disruptions, the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has announced a temporary waiver of overstay fines. Many residents and tourists found themselves unable to leave the country as scheduled, following widespread flight suspensions and airspace closures. The new exemption allows those affected to resolve their visa status without the burden of financial penalties for circumstances beyond their control.

Who Is Eligible for the Overstay Fine Waiver?

The fine waiver applies to overstay penalties incurred from February 28, 2026 onwards. Several categories of travellers are covered under this exemption, including:

  • Departure permit holders who overstayed due to being unable to depart within their grace period
  • Visit and tourist visa holders whose visas expired while flights were suspended
  • Residents with cancelled residency permits who were unable to leave after their permits ended

Officials have made it clear that this measure is intended to help those who genuinely had no control over flight disruptions, ensuring they are not unfairly penalised.

How to Check Your UAE Visa Status

Travellers who wish to confirm their visa validity or expiry date can do so easily online, depending on where their visa was issued.

For Dubai-issued visas:

  • Visit the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA) website
  • Select “Visa Status” from the homepage
  • Enter your application or file number and complete the captcha
  • Click “Search” to view your visa information

For visas from other emirates:

  • Use the ICP Smart Services platform
  • Search using your passport details, UID, Emirates ID, or file number, along with your date of birth
  • The system will display key visa details, including status and expiry date

Gradual Resumption of Flights

With most regular flights temporarily disrupted, UAE airlines are now gradually restoring limited services from major airports such as Dubai International, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah. Authorities continue to advise passengers to travel only with confirmed bookings, as schedules are subject to change while operations stabilise.

This fine waiver offers much-needed relief and clarity for travellers navigating the aftermath of the recent disruptions.
