Dubai Municipality has pointed out the space and recreation rules for workers’ accommodation as part of a bigger plan to improve infrastructure and living conditions in workers’ communities all over the emirate. I think this is a move.
According to the planning standards, every worker must have at least 3.7 square metres of sleeping space inside the accommodation room. The rules also give space for outdoor and recreation from 0.75 to 1.5 square metres for each person.
The 3.7 square metre room rule already exists in Dubai’s rules. Administrative Resolution No. 110 of 2020 says that workers’ accommodation rooms must offer 3.7 square metres to each occupant.
Assessment of accommodation buildings
Dubai Municipality said the standards were shown as part of strategic projects done with government partners to improve workers’ areas. I appreciate that these standards are part of projects.
The programme fixes accommodation buildings and the supporting infrastructure, plus services, community facilities and recreation spaces.
Then, 1,417 workers’ accommodation buildings were checked and rated in the initiative. The work was done at sites to look at current infrastructure and find spots that need more improvement. I was surprised by how many buildings needed improvement.
The municipality said the programme helps put Dubai’s Workers’ Accommodation Policy in place and is meant to make communities safer and more sustainable.
Model accommodation classification
As part of the programme, 19 accommodation facilities were put into a model‑accommodation system.
Seven of them got Silver status,s nine got Gold,ld and three reached Platinum status.
These classifications help test accommodation standards. Push for better workers’ living environments.
Dubai Municipality also made a government database that covers workers’ areas. The system is meant to help government bodies plan and do work together and to make choices based on the data that exists.
The municipality said the continuing surveys and infrastructure checks will show what needs to be done. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
