Steady Progress as Flights Resume and Passenger Numbers Rise
The United Arab Emirates is making significant strides in restoring its aviation sector after recent regional tensions caused widespread flight disruptions. According to the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), national carriers have now achieved a 44.6% recovery in airport operating levels—just under half of normal capacity—as airlines and airports work around the clock to resume services.
Passenger Traffic Rebounds as Recovery Accelerates
Between March 1 and March 12, UAE airports saw impressive activity despite ongoing restrictions. In this period, 1.4 million passengers travelled through the country’s airports, and 7,839 air traffic movements were recorded in UAE airspace. While operations remain below pre-disruption levels, these figures highlight a strong and steady return of passenger traffic and flight activity.
Safety Remains Top Priority
Minister of Economy, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, reiterated that passenger and staff safety remains the highest priority throughout the recovery phase. UAE authorities credit the aviation sector’s resilience to robust coordination between government agencies, airlines, and airports, which has allowed flights to resume safely and efficiently.
Strategic Measures Drive Recovery
To help accelerate the return to normalcy, the UAE has taken several key steps. Authorities have opened safe air corridors in cooperation with neighbouring GCC countries, increased capacity to allow up to 48 flights per hour in controlled airspace, and launched exceptional operations to help stranded travellers return home. Close coordination with airlines ensures that affected passengers receive timely notifications about revised schedules and flight changes.
Guidance for Travellers
Officials are urging all travellers to stay informed by regularly checking for updates from their airlines before heading to the airport. Passengers should follow official aviation announcements and only arrive at the airport once their flight status is confirmed, helping to keep operations running smoothly as the sector continues to recover.
Looking Ahead: More Flights to Resume
Despite the challenges posed by regional tensions, the UAE’s aviation sector is demonstrating resilience and adaptability. With nearly half of its usual operations already restored, authorities expect even more flights and routes to come online in the coming weeks, bringing the country closer to full recovery and reconnecting travellers with destinations around the world.
