UAE’s One-Month Relief: Expats with Expired Visas Can Come Home Without Extra Paperwork

New ICP Initiative Offers Relief for Stranded Residents

Abu Dhabi: In a move set to benefit thousands of expatriate residents, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has announced a temporary measure allowing expats who are currently abroad with expired residency visas to return to the UAE without the need for a new entry permit.

One-Month Grace Period for Returnees

The exception is valid for one month, beginning February 28 and running until March 31, 2026. During this period, eligible expatriates whose visas have expired while they were outside the country can travel back to the UAE under their previous residency—bypassing the usual requirement to obtain a new entry permit before re-entering.

Support for Expats Caught in Difficult Circumstances

Authorities explained that the decision was taken to support residents who were unable to make it back before their visa expired due to unforeseen or exceptional circumstances. The initiative is designed to ease travel and reduce the administrative burden for those who may have been stranded abroad and faced complications with the standard procedures.

Streamlined Process to Regularize Residency

Upon returning to the UAE, residents must complete the necessary steps to regularize their immigration status, such as renewing or updating their residency visa according to normal regulations. The ICP has reminded all returnees to ensure they follow official procedures promptly to maintain their legal status in the country.

Part of Broader Flexibility During Exceptional Times

Officials emphasized that the measure is part of the UAE government’s ongoing commitment to providing flexible solutions for residents during extraordinary situations. It is expected to help many expatriates who would otherwise be required to go through a lengthy re-entry process.

Deadline for Utilizing the Special Provision

Eligible residents are encouraged to take advantage of this temporary window and return before March 31, 2026. After this date, the regular immigration rules requiring a new entry permit for expired visas will once again apply.

This ICP initiative underscores the UAE’s proactive approach to supporting its diverse expatriate community and ensuring residents can reunite with families and resume their lives with minimal disruption
