Makkah Completes Ramadan Preparations as Umrah Pilgrim Numbers Set to Rise

The Holy Makkah Municipality has wrapped up comprehensive preparations ahead of Ramadan, mobilizing its resources to handle the expected surge in Umrah pilgrims during the holy month.

The municipality’s operational plan covers all essential services, including public cleaning, waste collection and disposal, pest control, transportation support, and strict monitoring of commercial establishments to ensure food safety and public health standards.

Special focus has been placed on high-density areas, particularly the central zone, commercial markets, and neighborhoods around the Grand Mosque. Measures aim to enhance food and water safety, manage increased waste volumes, curb unregulated street vending, and strengthen environmental sanitation.

More than 13,500 sanitation workers have been deployed, backed by over 920 cleaning vehicles and more than 88,000 waste containers of various sizes. Transfer stations and compactor units have also been activated to support waste collection in central areas.

For pest control, the municipality has assigned over 1,175 specialists and technicians equipped with more than 2,200 devices. Inspection committees will conduct round-the-clock monitoring of food outlets, collecting samples for lab testing throughout Ramadan.

Infrastructure readiness is also a priority, with regular maintenance of roads, tunnels, bridges, lighting, parks, parking areas, public restrooms, and stormwater drainage networks. Makkah’s infrastructure includes more than 18,000 streets, 62 tunnels, 123 bridges, and 458 parks and public squares.

The municipality has also set up vehicle holding areas and seasonal parking zones for pilgrims and developed an emergency response plan to handle potential incidents like heavy rainfall, with field teams operating around the clock during Ramadan.
