On Friday, Donald Trump wrote a message on his Truth Social platform. He said the European Union will have to pay for what they did. He thinks it is wrong and unfair. Donald Trump said he will start an investigation into the European Union’s trade practices. He wants to know if they are being unfair to United States businesses.
Donald Trump also said he will put tariffs on the European Union as soon as he can. This means they will have to pay money to sell things to the United States. The United States has a law that lets it investigate if they think another country is being unfair in trade. If they find out that the country is being unfair, they can put tariffs on it.
All of this started when the European Commission fined Google €890 million. They think Google was not following the rules of the Digital Markets Act. Google did two wrong things. First, they made it so their own services showed up first in search results. This is not fair to companies. Second, they did not let app developers tell users about options outside the Google Play Store.
The United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, is also not happy with the European Union’s decision. He thinks it could hurt trade between the United States and the European Union. They just made a trade agreement last year that made it easier for the European Union to sell cars to the United States.
The European Union says they are just trying to make sure everyone follows the rules. They say the Digital Markets Act is not meant to hurt United States technology companies. Donald Trump and Jamieson Greer do not agree. They think the European Union is being unfair to the United States.
