Hormuz Talks Progress, but Uranium Dispute Remains Unresolved

The future of Iran’s uranium stockpile is a problem for the United States and Iran. They are talking about a ceasefire. The uranium stockpile is the main issue. Iran has 440 kilograms of uranium that is 60 per cent pure. This is very close to the level used to make weapons. Western countries think this is very dangerous.

If Iran makes the uranium a little more pure, it could make about 10 weapons. The United States does not want this to happen. US President Donald Trump says Iran must get rid of the uranium before they can make a deal.

Iran says it has the right to make uranium for peaceful purposes. They want to use it for power, not nuclear weapons. The problem with the uranium is making it harder to talk about issues like stopping the fighting and removing sanctions.

  • Natural uranium is not very pure. It has to be enriched to be used in reactors or nuclear weapons.
  • Iran has enriched some of its uranium to 60 per cent. This is a step towards making nuclear weapons.
  • If Iran can enrich uranium to 60 per cent, it is not hard to make it more pure.

Iran also has some uranium that’s 20 per cent pure. They have a lot of lower-grade uranium too. Iran makes uranium at places like Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. The United States and Israel bombed some of these places in 2025.

The bombs did a lot of damage. They did not destroy all of the uranium. Now it is hard to know where the uranium is or what shape it is in. The United States wants Iran to get rid of the enriched uranium. They want Iran to promise not to make weapons. They also want Iran to let ships sail through the Strait of Hormuz.

One way to solve the problem is to take the uranium to another country, like Russia. Another way is to mix the uranium with lower-grade material so it’s not pure enough to make nuclear weapons.

But there is still a problem: how can we be sure Iran does not have any highly enriched uranium hidden away? This is a hard question to answer. Until this problem is solved, it will be hard to make a deal between the United States and Iran. The uranium stockpile is the issue that will decide if they can make a deal or not.
