AirAsia Makes Big Purchase of 150 Airbus A220 Jets

Dubai, May 7 2026: AirAsia has signed an important agreement to buy 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This is the single firm order in the history of the A220 programme.

The deal is also a win for Airbus because it now has more than 1,000 firm orders for the A220 family. This shows that people around the world want to buy this aircraft. The agreement was announced at a ceremony at Airbus Mirabel facility. Tony Fernandes and Lars Wagner were there.

As part of the agreement, AirAsia will be the first to use the A220’s 160-seat cabin layout. Airbus says this new layout adds 10 seats by putting in extra emergency exits on both sides of the aircraft.

The A220 will work well with AirAsia’s existing Airbus fleet. Help the airline grow in the future. AirAsia wants to fly to places in ASEAN and Central Asia. The A220 aircraft will also let the airline use jets on longer flights.

Tony Fernandes says this order is a step for the airline. It fits with the airline’s long-term plans to grow and get bigger. He says the aircraft will help AirAsia open up routes and make its vision of a big low-cost network carrier model a reality.

The people in charge at Airbus say the A220 is great because it has operating costs is fuel efficient and can fly long distances. This makes it perfect for growing medium-haul networks.

The A220 can carry between 100 and 160 passengers. Fly up to 6,700 kilometres. Airbus says the aircraft can already use up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The goal is to make all Airbus aircraft work with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2030.

As of March 2026 than 500 A220 aircraft have been delivered to 25 airlines around the world. This order makes AirAsia stronger in the aviation market. It also helps Airbus become a player in the narrow-body aircraft segment.

AirAsia’s big order of 150 aircraft is a milestone for both the airline and Airbus. It shows that people are confident in the growth of aviation and the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. AirAsia and Airbus are both happy about this deal. AirAsia will get 150 Airbus A220 Jets.
