UAE Assures Public: Onion and Tomato Price Hike Is Temporary as Supplies Rise

The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has reassured residents that the recent spike in onion and tomato prices is only temporary. Officials confirmed that fresh shipments are already reaching markets across the country, and that prices are expected to normalize soon.

Stable Supply Chains and Strong Reserves

According to the ministry, the price fluctuation over the past two days is a natural, short-term response to the ongoing regional crisis. However, authorities stressed that the UAE’s supply chains remain robust and well-stocked. Large quantities of onions and tomatoes have been delivered to local markets, with additional supplies on the way. The government emphasized that there is no shortage of essential goods, noting that the UAE maintains a strategic food stockpile capable of covering demand for up to six months.

Strict Monitoring During Ramadan

With Ramadan underway, officials have stepped up market monitoring to prevent unjustified price hikes. The ministry enforces strict pricing policies on nine essential commodities, including cooking oil, eggs, dairy, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread, and wheat. Retailers and suppliers are not allowed to raise prices without prior approval from the ministry or the national pricing committee.

Supply chains continue to operate smoothly through the UAE’s ports and entry points, ensuring that food products are distributed efficiently to retailers across the country.

Thousands of Inspections and Violations Addressed

As part of its intensified monitoring campaign, the ministry conducted 7,105 inspection visits to markets nationwide in collaboration with local economic authorities. These inspections uncovered 567 violations, mostly related to unjustified price increases. Officials issued 449 warnings and imposed a total of Dh207,250 in financial fines on violators.

The government assured the public that monitoring would continue to intensify to ensure compliance with consumer protection and fair pricing rules.

Consumer Cooperation Is Key

Authorities also called on residents to avoid panic buying or hoarding, stressing that responsible shopping helps maintain price stability and ensures that essential goods remain available to all. The ministry reiterated that the UAE’s diversified supply sources, efficient logistics, and strong strategic reserves will continue to guarantee stable food supplies—even during periods of regional uncertainty.
