IAF Mourns Loss of Two Pilots in Su-30MKI Crash During Assam Training Mission

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the deaths of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar after their Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed during a routine training sortie over Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. The incident has cast a shadow over the nation’s armed forces, with deep condolences pouring in for the bereaved families.

Loss of Radar Contact Raises Alarms

The tragedy unfolded on Thursday when the twin-engine Su-30MKI lost radar contact while flying over the region, located about 60 kilometres from Jorhat. The sudden disappearance from radar screens triggered immediate concern among authorities, who swiftly launched a search and rescue operation. Teams from the Air Force, local administration, and other security agencies were quickly mobilised to locate the aircraft and assess the situation on the ground.

Swift Response, But No Survivors

Despite rapid deployment of search and rescue teams, it was soon confirmed that both pilots had sustained fatal injuries in the crash. The IAF expressed its solidarity with the families, noting on social media that “all personnel stand with the bereaved families during this difficult time.”

Sukhoi Su-30MKI: Backbone of IAF’s Defence

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a cornerstone of India’s air defence fleet, renowned for its long range, heavy payload, and advanced manoeuvrability. As a frontline multi-role fighter, it plays a vital role in maintaining India’s aerial supremacy. While the aircraft is generally regarded as reliable, there have been a few incidents in the past. In 2019, a similar crash near Tezpur saw both pilots eject safely.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have announced a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the latest crash, looking into both technical and operational factors. The accident underscores the inherent risks faced by military aviators and the importance of continuous safety and training protocols.

The nation joins the IAF in mourning the loss of two dedicated officers, remembering their service and sacrifice in the line of duty.
