Kathmandu: The death count from the floods in Nepal has gone up to 781, and 2,502 people are still missing, according to the country’s disaster authority on Sunday.
Rescue and recovery work has been going on for five days after the disaster happened on Wednesday near the border of Nepal and China.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said the list of missing people has 1,910 people from Nepal and 592 people from other countries.
The authority said the missing people from countries include 933 workers who are working on hydropower projects near the river that was hit by a strong flood.
Many people are still not known where they are. The area that was hit the most is called Rasuwa, where 562 people are still not known where they are, according to the disaster authority.
The size of the disaster has made rescue work hard. Officials are still searching the areas that were hit and checking how much damage was done.
The floods hit areas near the border with China, where strong water flow went through houses and buildings.
Chinese news outlets reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet because of the disaster.
When the numbers from Nepal and Tibet are added together, the total death count is 797. The number of people who are still missing is 3,048.
Bodies found in India
The disaster also affected places that’re downstream in India. Indian officials said they found seven bodies in rivers that come from Nepal. These people are thought to have been affected by the floods.
These deaths are not part of the count from Nepal.
Officials in Nepal are still trying to find people who are missing and helping the communities that were hit by the floods. Assessments of the damage to buildings and the surrounding areas are still happening.
With, than 2,500 people still missing in Nepal, officials have said that the death count might change as the search and recovery work continues.
