Dubai: The UAE will have its longest day on Sunday. This is because of the summer solstice. The summer solstice marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The solstice will happen on June 21 at 12:25 pm UAE time. At this time, the Sun will be at its point and shine directly above a special line on Earth called the Tropic of Cancer. This makes the day very long. The night very short.
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, who’s in charge of the Emirates Astronomical Society, daylight hours in the UAE will be around 13 hours and 50 minutes. This is the time of the year.
- The summer solstice happens because Earth is tilted.
- During this time the Northern Hemisphere gets a lot of sunlight.
- The Southern Hemisphere has its day and starts to get colder.
Al Jarwan said that the Sun will be above the Tropic of Cancer. This makes the shadows very short. The summer solstice does not mean it will be the hottest. Temperatures will keep going up.
There is a saying: “There is no true heat until after the turning.” This means the heat will come after the solstice.
- During the half of summer daytime temperatures in the UAE will be between 41°C and 43°C.
- Overnight temperatures will be, between 27°C and 31°C.
- The summer season has winds that can make sand storms. Sometimes it gets very hot.
- Hot winds called “Samoom” can make it even hotter.
- As summer goes on the air will get humid. Moist winds will make clouds form over the Hajar Mountains. Sometimes it will rain.
- Meteorologists define summer differently. They say summer starts on June 1 and ends on August 31. The summer solstice date changes a bit every year. It usually happens on June 20 21 or 22.
