Donald Trump might soon be on US currency. He could be the living US president in over a century to be on American money. This is because of a proposal for a $250 bill.
- A report by The Washington Post said that the US Treasury Department has talked about making a $250 note with Trump’s picture. The note would also have branding for America’s birthday in 2026. This idea breaks a standing US tradition. The tradition says that only people who are not alive can be on US currency.
The report said that some Treasury officials who were appointed when Trump was president told staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to start making prototype designs. Some employees are worried about the procedural issues. They said that the Bureau officials warned that having a living president on US currency would be against the rules.
The design would include references to the “America 250 anniversary.” This is for the anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence on July 4 2026. This news has made opponents criticize the Trump administration. They say that the administration is putting Trumps image and name on things and public symbols.
In recent months, some government projects and commemorative initiatives have included Trump branding or pictures. There were proposals for gold coins and branding changes for cultural institutions. Democratic lawmakers criticised the proposal. Senator Mark Warner said that the idea is an attempt to “stoke the president’s ego.”
A Treasury Department spokesperson said that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is doing ” planning and due diligence.” They are responding to a law that was introduced in Congress last year. The law would allow Trump to be on a $250 bill. The law has not yet been approved by Congress. This means that the future of the proposal is uncertain. Donald Trump and the $250 bill are still being discussed.
