Archer Takes Major Step Toward Abu Dhabi Air Taxi Operations

California-based company Archer Aviation has moved a step closer to launching air taxi services in Abu Dhabi. This is because the UAE’s aviation regulator has introduced a certification pathway. This pathway is designed to accelerate commercial operations for next-generation aircraft like Archer Aviation’s electric air taxi.

The company said its Midnight electric air taxi has entered the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority’s Restricted Type Certificate programme. This new framework allows aircraft to begin restricted or controlled operations before receiving full certification for widespread passenger use.

This development is a milestone in the UAE’s ambition to become one of the world’s first countries to introduce commercial air taxi services. Archer Aviation said the RTC programme is specifically designed to support the integration of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft into the UAE airspace. This will happen while final testing and certification continue for Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft.

Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft is expected to operate in partnership with Abu Dhabi Aviation. Abu Dhabi Aviation will serve as the operator for the planned air taxi network in Abu Dhabi.

Archer Aviation founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said the UAE has emerged as one of the forward-looking markets for advanced aviation technologies. He said the RTC programme represents a step toward bringing electric air taxi services to the region of Abu Dhabi.

A Restricted Type Certificate is different from a Type Certificate. A full Type Certificate confirms an aircraft has met all safety, engineering and operational standards for commercial use. On the other hand, a Restricted Type Certificate permits limited operations under specific conditions. This happens while broader certification work continues for Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft.

The UAE’s approach comes as aviation regulators globally work to establish rules for the emerging vertical take-off and landing industry. Archer Aviation is still progressing through the certification process in the United States. Testing and compliance reviews remain ongoing for Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft.

The UAE’s aviation authorities said they are working across operational areas before launch. These areas include pilot training, maintenance systems, vertiport infrastructure, airspace integration and regulatory oversight for Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft.

Industry analysts view the UAE as one of the leading markets for urban air mobility. This is due to its aviation infrastructure, regulatory flexibility and government-backed innovation initiatives. If approvals continue on schedule, Abu Dhabi could become one of the cities in the world to introduce commercial electric air taxi operations with Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft.
