Russia, Ukraine begin 32-hour Easter ceasefire amid deep mistrust

Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Volodymyr Zelensky’s Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire. This means that for a while, there will be no fighting. The ceasefire started on Saturday evening. Will last for 32 hours until the end of Sunday.

This ceasefire is happening because of Orthodox Easter. Both Russia and Ukraine said they will follow the ceasefire. People are not very sure if it will work because in the past, promises like this have been broken.

Ukrainian officials said they will stop fighting for now. If Russia starts fighting Ukraine again, it will fight back right away. The city of Kyiv said that what they do will depend on what Russia does. So the ceasefire is only going to work if both sides are careful.

There has been a lot of fighting for weeks, with drones and shelling happening in places. Just before the ceasefire started, there were still attacks on both sides. This shows that the ceasefire is very fragile.

In a city called Kharkiv, which is close to the Russian border, people are hoping for a break from the constant noise of air raid sirens and bombs. Many people are not very hopeful because in the past, ceasefires have not lasted very long.

Something good did happen, though. Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners of war. This is one of the things that they have been able to work together on during the war.

The war between Russia and Ukraine started in 2022. Has been very bad, with many people hurt or killed and many more having to leave their homes. Even though people have been trying to make peace, it has not been working well lately. This Easter ceasefire gives a little bit of hope, even if it is not very certain.

For now, it is quiet. Like before, we do not know if the quiet will last. Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Volodymyr Zelensky’s Ukraine have to be careful if they want the ceasefire to work.
