Hotlines, safety steps rolled out for Filipino seafarers amid Middle East tensions

Dubai: In Dubai, people are advising seafarers to stay calm and be careful when sailing in the Middle East. The people in charge are doing more to help them, like making phone numbers they can call.

The Department of Migrant Workers is watching everything closely. Working with other groups around the world to make sure Filipino seafarers are safe. These groups include the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines.

Many seafarers and their families are getting worried those who sail near important places like the Strait of Hormuz. This is an important place for oil to be shipped around the world.

The Department of Migrant Workers is saying to the seafarers “Please stay calm be careful and call us if you need help.” They want the seafarers to know that there are people to help them at any time.

To make it easier for seafarers to get help the authorities have made phone numbers on WhatsApp and Viber called “Kumusta Kabayan”. They also have phone numbers from the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines. These phone numbers are like a lifeline for seafarers who’re in trouble or are not sure what to do.

Something good has happened. Philippine officials have talked to Iran and Iran has said that Philippine ships and seafarers can sail through the Strait of Hormuz safely.

With this good news the authorities are still saying that the situation can change at any time. They are telling the seafarers to keep in touch with the groups and to follow the safety instructions carefully.

Because there is still tension in the Middle East the government and the groups that help seafarers are working together to keep thousands of Filipino seafarers while they work on the water. Filipino seafarers are very important. The people, in charge want to make sure they are safe. The Department of Migrant Workers and other groups are doing a lot to help seafarers.
