UAE Police Clamp Down on Modified Cars Making ‘Explosion-Like’ Noises

Nationwide Crackdown Targets Illegal Vehicle Modifications

Police forces across the United Arab Emirates have intensified efforts to curb the growing problem of illegally modified cars that create loud, “explosion-like” noises in residential areas. The crackdown comes after a spike in complaints from residents, particularly in Dubai and Sharjah, who reported being startled by sudden engine bursts late at night.

Loud Noises Spark Fears Amid Regional Tension

With ongoing regional tensions, the loud bangs and popping sounds initially caused panic among some residents, who feared the noises might signal explosions or even missile strikes. Authorities later confirmed that the sounds were, in fact, coming from cars and motorcycles with modified exhaust systems, designed specifically to produce dramatic backfires and engine revving.

Police Step Up Patrols and Monitoring

In response, Dubai Police have ramped up patrols in affected neighbourhoods and are using advanced monitoring technology to identify violators. Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei emphasised that the campaign is aimed at improving road safety, reducing public disturbances, and stopping unauthorised vehicle modifications.

Sharjah Police have also launched inspection campaigns and set up checkpoints to catch drivers with illegal modifications. Both forces stress that there is no security threat and that the UAE remains safe and stable.

Heavy Fines and Penalties for Offenders

UAE traffic law imposes strict penalties on those caught making excessive noise with their vehicles. Offenders face a Dh2,000 fine, 12 black points on their licence, and potential vehicle impoundment. Cars modified without proper permission can also be confiscated, with release fees reaching up to Dh10,000.

Residents Urged to Report Reckless Driving

Authorities are calling on parents to closely monitor teenage and young drivers, and encourage all residents to report reckless or noisy driving through official police channels. Officials reiterated that while the recent noises were alarming, they were not related to security incidents, but rather to illegal car modifications and irresponsible behaviour.

UAE is taking strong action to restore peace and quiet to its communities, ensuring that everyone can feel safe—both on the roads and in their homes.
