Five-Day Break to Mark the End of Ramadan
The Sultanate of Oman has declared a five-day Eid Al Fitr holiday for employees in both the public and private sectors, giving residents across the country a chance to celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan with family and friends. The announcement, made by the country’s official news agency, sets the holiday period from Thursday, March 19, 2026 (Ramadan 29), through Tuesday, March 24.
Moon Sighting to Confirm Start Date
As per Islamic tradition, the exact start of Eid Al Fitr will be determined by the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon, scheduled for the evening of March 19 in Oman. The new moon marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal and signals the start of Eid festivities. In Oman, Ramadan began on February 19, slightly differing from some neighbouring countries, which means the timing of Eid holidays may vary across the region.
Holiday Policy Covers All Employees
According to Omani regulations, the Eid break begins on Ramadan 29 and continues until Shawwal 3, ensuring that both government and private sector workers can fully enjoy the celebrations. The holiday policy aligns with Royal Decree No. 88/2022, which governs official holidays in the sultanate.
Extra Day Off for Friday Eid
A unique provision in Omani law stipulates that if the first day of Eid falls on a Friday, employees are entitled to an additional day off. This ensures that workers receive the full benefit of the holiday, even if it overlaps with the weekend.
Celebrating Eid Al Fitr in Oman
Eid Al Fitr is one of the most cherished occasions in the Islamic calendar, marking the conclusion of a month of fasting, reflection, and prayer. Omanis and residents across the country traditionally observe the festival with special prayers, gatherings with loved ones, acts of charity, and festive meals.
With a generous five-day break, many are expected to take advantage of the time off to travel, reconnect with family, and participate in community events, making this year’s Eid Al Fitr a truly memorable celebration for all.
