India has issued an urgent advisory urging its citizens in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible, amid rising tensions and fears of a potential US military strike on Tehran. The Ministry of External Affairs, along with the Indian Embassy in Tehran, shared the warning on Monday, citing the “evolving security situation” in the region.
“In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave by available means of transport, including commercial flights,” the embassy announced on social media. Indians still in Iran are also advised to avoid unnecessary travel within the country, stay vigilant, and keep in close contact with the embassy for updates or assistance.
An estimated 10,000 Indians—including students, professionals, businesspeople, pilgrims, and workers—are currently based in Iran. Authorities are urging all Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to steer clear of areas experiencing protests or demonstrations, and to closely monitor official updates.
The advisory comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran reach new heights, raising fears of military escalation across West Asia. Several other countries have already updated their travel warnings for Iran in recent days.
This warning from New Delhi also comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Israel, where he is expected to bolster ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly in defence, technology, and security. While India has deepened its relationship with Israel, it also maintains longstanding diplomatic and economic ties with Iran—including its ongoing investment in the strategic Chabahar Port project, which links India to Afghanistan and Central Asia.
Officials reiterated that the safety of Indian citizens abroad remains the government’s top priority, and further advisories will be issued as the situation unfolds.
