US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate hike in global tariffs, raising rates from 10% to 15% in a bold move that further escalates his administration’s hardline trade policy—even as he faces a recent Supreme Court defeat.
Trump made the announcement on Saturday via his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: “Please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries.”
This move comes just a day after the US Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that Trump had overstepped his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court made clear that the law does not give the president blanket power to impose broad-based tariffs.
In response to the ruling during a press conference, Trump called the decision “deeply disappointing,” criticizing it as “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American.” He expressed his frustration with the justices who opposed him, saying he was “absolutely ashamed.”
Despite the setback, Trump insisted that the new 15% tariff is both fully legal and “legally tested.” He argued that the US has been unfairly treated by trading partners for decades and that the adjustment is part of his broader plan to protect American economic interests and rebalance trade relationships worldwide.
The new tariff builds on Trump’s earlier February 20 decision to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to levy duties up to 15% for a limited period in certain situations. Trump said his team will explore further tariff measures within legal boundaries in the months ahead.
He ended his announcement with a familiar refrain, promising to continue “Making America Great Again – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!”
