Dubai: India’s nationwide protests over repeated examination paper leaks have spread beyond the streets with Gen Z turning demonstrations into a viral social media movement driven by memes, satire and pop culture.
As students keep asking for responsibility and changes to India’s examination system, platforms like Instagram, X and YouTube have turned into an extension of the protests, where reels, film-style edits and funny posts move faster than regular news reports.
The youth-driven demonstrations, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), have mixed action with internet culture. Protest videos have been changed with Bollywood songs, K-pop music, and gaming-style edits, making police chases into clips inspired by mobile games like Subway Surfers.
One of the movements shared memes had a sign aimed at Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan that read “Bro is still employed “, showing the anger of students asking for his resignation because of repeated examination paper leaks.
People have also used “Get Ready With Me: Protest Edition” videos showing clothes, goggles and shoes that are good for long marches and possible fights with police. Some shared fitness tracker pictures after running during protests, joking that police actions had accidentally made them more fit.
Pop culture references have become a part of the campaign. Scenes from Bollywood movies have been changed into jokes, while superhero clothes, including Batman, Spider-Man and Superman, have been seen at rallies, giving the protests a dramatic look.
A video that was shared widely showed a protester calmly picking up a gas shell and throwing it back, which made social media users say the moment was like an “Uno Reverse” card. Even though there is humour, students say the campaign is based on worries about repeated exam leaks and the loss of trust in the country’s competitive testing system.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said there will be fast-track courts to punish those involved in paper leaks. Protest organisers say they still want bigger changes and more responsibility. For young Indians, memes are more than just fun—they are a strong way to share their message, get millions online and keep the focus on one of the biggest education problems in the country.
